Dancehall star, Skillibeng, has scored the biggest honour of his career so far, winning Best Caribbean Music Act at the 2022 MOBO Awards in London.
The Crocodile Teeth singer took home the first installment of the award, which is a replacement for the Best Reggae Act category. Skillibeng was victorious in a highly competitive field that included Grammy-winning artistes, Sean Paul and Koffee. The nominees also included Shenseea, Popcaan and the Queen of Dancehall, Spice.
During his acceptance speech, Skillibeng said, “I represent Jamaica. I’m from a small island where it’s very hard and I really appreciate this award. And, to everybody that’s working hard, believe in yourself, believe in your dreams.” He was also nominated for the Best International Act award on the night, which was won by Afro Beats star, Burna Boy.
The award culminates a banner year for Skillibeng who has been getting over with his hit, Whap Whap. The song consistently garnered a lot of attention in American and British markets, helping him become more of a household name. Other notable singles he’s released this year include Favourite Freak and Anyway. Additionally, he featured alongside DJ Khaled and a slew of Jamaican music heavyweights on Khaled’s song, These Streets Know My Name.
His remix for Crocodile Teeth in 2021 alongside hip-hop megastar, Nicki Minaj, scored him his first Billboard Hot 100 hit.
