Andrew Holness remains Prime Minister after close General Election

Andrew Holnees raises his arm in victory.

It’s a hat-trick of victories for Andrew Holness as the Prime Minister of Jamaica retains his stronghold as head of state following the 2025 General Elections.

The Jamaica Labour Party won the hotly contested election by 34 seats to 29 against the People’s National Party. The results were a significant contrast to the 2020 election, which saw the JLP win 49-14, marking one of the most lopsided elections in Jamaica’s history. Holness also survived a scare in his constituency, St. Andrew West Central, as he trailed PNP contender Paul Buchanan after 80% of the ballot boxes were counted. However, Holness eventually won comfortably, keeping his seat.

The JLP’s victory comes amid promises of a significant minimum wage increase, reduced crime rates nationwide and lower unemployment rates during Holness’ latest tenure. Holness will oversee his third consecutive term as Prime Minister, holding off PNP leader Mark Golding, whose party made significant strides in the last five years and now has a much stronger say in parliament.

Holness’ third consecutive win came on Sept. 3, an increasingly lucky day for the JLP. Former Prime Minister Bruce Goldin’s 2007 win and Holness’ 2020 victory also came on Sept. 3
