Grand Slam 2025: A Thrilling Event with Room for Improvement

Gabby Thomas crosses the finish line after winning the women's 200m at the Grand Slam Track meet in Kingston, Jamaica

The first meeting of Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track kicked off last Friday in Kingston. While the performances were outstanding, the turnout left much to be desired. Like many others, I had expected a bigger crowd.

Despite the lower-than-expected attendance, I thoroughly enjoyed the event. I hope it returns to Jamaica because not only does it benefit fans, but the athletes earn far more than they usually would, which is fantastic for them.

What Went Well

 🏟️ Event Organization & Logistics

The meet was well-organized, starting and ending on time. In fact, all track events concluded ahead of schedule on the final day. This level of organization easily outshone local track meets. The smooth transitions between events were impressive, and the new track was outstanding. Unlike the questionable equipment at Champs 2025, this meet had top-notch gear. The restrooms were decent, although they could use some renovations, which would fall under the responsibility of Jamaica’s local governing body.

In terms of accessibility, about 85% of the venue was easily navigable. While I expected more interaction between the athletes and the bleachers, I was pleasantly surprised to see athletes engaging with fans in the stands, which is a positive shift. A section for buying memorabilia added a nice touch to the experience.

👟 Athlete Performance

Salwa Eid Naser (400m: 48.67s)**

The talk of the meet was Salwa Eid Naser’s performance. Running 48.67 in April is a statement of intent. It was clear that she is back and ready to win another Olympic gold medal. The big question is whether she can break the world record this time. I spoke with her, and she was not only sweet and polite but also had an infectious smile.

Danielle Williams (100m Hurdles)

Danielle Williams was the only Jamaican to win at the meet, and she made history as the first winner of the Challenger Series. Her performance was a pleasant surprise for many. Although I didn’t take her claims about the 100m hurdles seriously at first, she proved me wrong. She looked incredibly strong and impressive.

I’m starting a petition for her to try the 100m/200m double. Imagine how powerful she could be if she focused more on speed work. Regardless, I hope she wins a third gold medal at the upcoming world championships in September.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (400m: 50.32s, 400m Hurdles: 52.76s)

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone opened her season with a dominant performance. She made the competition look effortless, winning both the 400m and 400m hurdles with ease. She is undoubtedly on course to win gold in any event she chooses.

Sasha Zoya (100m Winner)

Sasha Zoya was another standout, following up his second-place finish in the hurdles with a win in the 100m. His victory earned him the overall event win. What touched the crowd was his response when asked about what he would do with his prize money. Zoya said he would buy an apartment for his mother.

Zoya, a former U20 champion, is definitely one to watch, and I believe he has the potential to become an Olympic champion one day.

**Marc Arop (800m Winner)

Marc Arop made an impressive comeback after a 6th place finish in the 1500m by winning the 800m, upstaging Emmanuel Wanyonyi in the process. This was a major confidence booster for Arop, and it proved that he has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

After finishing second in the Paris Olympics, I’m sure Arop is ready to defend his title and fight for it.

🧑⚖️ Officiating & Rules

There were no controversial decisions, and the event went off without a hitch. The officiating team was well-organized and efficient. With numerous officials stationed in various areas, there was no confusion, and the entire event ran smoothly.

🎤 Audience & Experience

The atmosphere at the event was electrifying. The announcer engaged with the crowd, asking questions and even commenting on people’s outfits. It created an exciting vibe, and the energy was contagious.

While the music was decent for the most part, the seating in the bleachers was a bit of an issue. The bleachers need to be upgraded with proper seating, similar to what is available in the grandstand, and covering the entire stadium would improve comfort. The sun scorched, and I can’t imagine how fans in the bleachers felt.

Furthermore, the grandstand had food vendors, including KFC, but the bleachers lacked such amenities, disappointing considering the larger crowd in that section. While this issue isn’t the responsibility of the Grand Slam organizers, it falls to the local federation and the Minister of Sports to address it. It’s time we stop the segregation of fans in bleachers vs. grandstand seating. Everyone should have equal access to amenities.

🧃 Amenities & Support Services

Medical attention was on point. When a runner went down, the response was swift, and she was quickly assisted off the track. The medical team was well-equipped and attentive, ensuring the safety of all participants.

📸 Media & Communication

The media coverage was undeniably one of the highlights of the meet. There were videographers stationed everywhere, drones capturing aerial footage, and even a VR section for fans to experience the meet from different angles.

The event was well-documented, and the media team did an excellent job in showcasing the event to the world.

What Didn’t Go Well

Food & Drink

While there were vendors in the grandstand, fans in the bleachers had limited food options, mainly just hot dogs and popcorn. The grandstand, on the other hand, had a proper food area, including KFC. This disparity in amenities needs to be addressed to ensure all fans, regardless of where they are seated, have access to food and drink options.

Ticket Pricing

The ticket prices were a major deterrent for many people. The grandstand ticket, priced at around $9,000, was beyond the reach of most Jamaicans, many of whom earn far less than that. This contributed to the poor turnout, as only a small percentage could afford the tickets.

Marketing

Many people I spoke to were either unaware of the event or didn’t have enough information about it. A more aggressive and targeted marketing campaign could have drawn in a larger crowd. If the event had been marketed more effectively, I’m sure more people would have attended.

What Can Be Done Next Year at Grand Slam

🎯 Improvement Suggestions

Marketing

If marketing had been more effective, the event would have garnered more support. Here are some suggestions:

Island-wide Tour

Promote the event across Jamaica, visiting schools, universities, and major towns to raise awareness.

Champs Partnership

Set up a special booth at Champs and distribute flyers and memorabilia to build excitement for the meet.

Corporate Involvement

Grand Slam should engage corporate sponsors like Red Bull, Pepsi, Lucozade, Scotia, Grace, and Banks. Offer bundle deals, such as buying five Lucozade drinks and getting a discount on tickets. Companies can also purchase tickets for their employees and customers.

Seating & Amenities

The seating in the bleachers needs an overhaul. Comfortable seating, proper shading, and better food options for bleacher fans should be a priority.

Collaboration

My team and I would love to assist with marketing and covering the event next year. We are open to conversations and believe our involvement could help enhance the overall experience.

In conclusion, the Grand Slam meet was a major success in terms of athlete performances, event organization, and media coverage. However, there are clear areas for improvement in marketing, ticket pricing, and fan amenities. If these issues are addressed, the event could see even more success in the future, attracting larger crowds and benefiting both the athletes and the fans.
