Jamaica’s 🇯🇲 Boogie Man, Barrington Gordon, most popularly known as Barry G, died on Wednesday at Savanna-La-Mar Hospital following a bout with pneumonia. He was 69 years old, with his death coming amid the passage of Hurricane Melissa across Jamaica.

Gordon first made his name as a host at the now-defunct Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation. While at the JBC, the Kingston College alum hosted the Boogie Down Show and the Supermix, the latter of which made him arguably Jamaica’s most popular disc jockey. Gordon later left the JBC for rival RJR94FM and also became the top DJ on Mello FM, boosting the Montego Bay radio station’s rise to prominence.

Along with his local exploits, Barry G became famous globally for his radio clashes with fellow industry legend David Rodigan. Gordon earned the Order of Distinction in 2010 for his services to broadcasting. He left Mello after a sparkling 11-year run in 2021 and got baptised a year later.

Earlier this year, Barry G dispelled rumours of his passing amid speculated health issues, insisting he was living well with his family in Savanna-La-Mar, his hometown. Long-time friend and former technical operator Michael Chambers confirmed Gordon’s death.
