Reggae singer, Sevana, avoids serving prison time after agreeing to pay a $300,000 fine following her guilty plea to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

Sevana, whose real name is Anna-Sharé Blake, appeared at the Westmoreland Parish Court in her hometown on Tuesday where she faced sentencing after entering her plea on Oct. 31. When appearing before the court, the judge ordered her to pay the fine or face a two-year prison sentence. The singer took the fine and also accepted a two-year driving ban while represented by her attorney, Everton Dewar.

Known for songs such as Mango and Lowe Mi, Sevana faced a death by dangerous driving charge following a May 2021 collision that claimed the life of 32-year-old Ordia Cordiel. The accident happened along the Scott Cove main road in Whitehorse, Westmoreland. Her Honda City collided with a Honda Fit travelling in the opposite direction which carried Cordiel as a passenger. Cordiel died from her injuries while admitted at Black River Hospital. Sevana was a new driver at the time of the crash.

During the sentencing hearing, the judge insisted he couldn’t place sufficient weight on allegations Sevana hosted a party in Cordiel’s community or that she had a rift with the deceased woman’s family. The singer also rebutted allegations made in a social enquiry report read by a probation officer. There has been no word on whether the family will receive any reparation following the accident.

Sevana was formerly a member of Protoje’s Indiggnation Collective also featuring Lila Ike and Jaz Elise. She amicably severed ties with the collective earlier this year as she sought greater control over her career.
