Veteran reggae singer Fantan Mojah dies

Fantan Mojah lit up the reggae scene with several classics before his death at age 49

The reggae world is in mourning once again as veteran reggae singer Fantan Mojah has died.

The esteemed artiste, whose real name was Owen Lennox Moncreiffe, passed away at the University Hospital of the West Indies on Jul. 14, just three weeks before his 50th birthday. Moncreiffe died from heart complications, with his booking agent confirming that the entertainer’s health deteriorated considerably in the last week before his passing.

Fantan Mojah rose to prominence in the 2000s, becoming one of the decade’s signature voices in reggae music. The singer emerged with classic hits like “Hungry,” “Stronger,” and “When Will I See You Again.” He also saw success for him and Jah Cure’s hit collaboration, “Dem Nuh Build Great Man.” As the 2010s approached, the St. Elizabeth native struck gold with “Rasta Got Soul.” He experimented with his sound at the turn of the 2020s, releasing more raunchy dancehall songs aimed at his female fans, including “Touch My Body.”

Several artistes paid tribute to Fantan Mojah after his death, including Sizzla, Warrior King and Bascom X, among others.
