Mavado’s teenage son, Dante, convicted of murder

Dante Brooks, the 18-year-old son of dancehall legend, Mavado, has been convicted of murder in relation to an incident in Cassava Piece back in 2018.

Brooks, who was also found guilty of illegal possession of a firearm and arson, was handed his verdicts on Wednesday during a hearing at the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston. His co-accused in the matter, Andre Hinds, was also convicted.

Brooks is expected to face sentencing on March 10. However, his legal team, led by Peter Champagnie, has indicated their intention to appeal.

All of this stems from the June 5, 2018 killing of Lorenzo Thomas in Cassava Piece, Mavado’s home community. Prosecutors stated that Brooks and Hines were among a group of five who broke into Thomas’ home, shot him, then allegedly proceeded to pour gasoline on Thomas’ body and the house before setting them on fire.

Thomas’ father, who was allegedly pushed into another room during the incident, testified during the trial, saying he knew his son’s killers from the community.

Brooks had reportedly been in juvenile detention since July 2018 before being transferred to an adult facility as he awaited trial
