Reggae Girlz handed tricky 2023 Women’s World Cup group

The Reggae Girlz face another tricky Women’s World Cup group as the draw for the 2023 edition of the tournament took place Saturday morning.

The Girlz face the hosts of the 2019 tournament, France, in their opening Group F game on July 23. They then will challenge Brazil, who they played in their first-ever World Cup game that same year on July 29.

The final group game on August 2nd sees them play the winner of an intercontinental mini-tournament taking place next February. The final opponent could be one of Chinese Taipei, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea or Panama, who they beat to qualify for the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

Jamaica hopes to improve on its debut showing at the 2019 tournament where they were defeated by Brazil, Italy and Australia. The Australia game saw them score their first World Cup goal through Havana Solaun thanks to a through ball by Khadija Shaw.

They qualified for the 2023 Women’s World Cup by defeating Mexico and Haiti during the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship. They finished third in the competition after also defeating Costa Rica.

The 2023 Women’s World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, kicks off on July 20, 2023.
